We sell CBCT scanners for a living, and the same thing happens every time. The machine goes in, the team is trained on the buttons, and six months later somebody asks a question that should have been answered before the first scan — about justification, about dose, about what that grey smear across the mandible actually is.
The training exists. It is usually a day in a hotel conference room, three counties away, on a Saturday you were going to spend with your family. So it gets postponed, and postponed again.
So we built the Level 1 course as something you can do in the gaps. Twenty minutes at a time if that is all you have. It stops where you stopped and picks up there next time.

Level 1 teaches you the principles. Reporting is a different skill.
Once you know what you are looking at, the next question is how to report the whole volume and write it up. That is taught in person by Dr Ed Walker, Consultant Dental & Maxillofacial Radiologist, at Octagon House near Keighley — hands-on datasets, live positioning on Carestream and Acteon machines, and a report writing masterclass. Fifteen delegates maximum.
A separate course, run and taught by Dr Walker. The online Level 1 above is ours, and is not part of his programme — but it is a sound grounding before you attend either.

Aims and objectives.
Aim: to give dental professionals a sound working knowledge of cone beam computed tomography — how it works, when it is justified, what the regulations require, and how to interpret what a scan shows.
On completing this course you will be able to:
- Explain how CBCT differs from conventional dental radiography, and where each is appropriate
- Apply the principles of justification and optimisation to a request for a cone beam scan
- Describe the duty holders and responsibilities set out in IR(ME)R, and identify which apply to you
- Handle referrals and patient imaging data lawfully
- Relate exposure factors, voxel size and field of view to dose and image quality
- Recognise normal anatomy of the jaws and adjacent structures in three planes
- Identify common artefacts, explain their causes and take steps to reduce them
- Recognise the limits of your own competence and know when to refer a scan for a specialist radiology report
Development outcomes C and D. Five hours of verifiable enhanced CPD. Suitable for dentists, dental nurses, hygienists, therapists and practice managers. No prior CBCT experience is assumed.

Is this verifiable CPD?
Yes. Five hours of verifiable enhanced CPD, mapped to GDC development outcomes C and D. You complete the modules, pass the exam, fill in the feedback form, and the certificate is issued with a number anyone can check at learn.360v.co.uk/verify.
How long do I have to finish it?
As long as you like. Access does not expire. The course remembers where you stopped, so twenty minutes between patients is a perfectly reasonable way to do it.
Do I need a CBCT machine?
No. Plenty of people take this before they buy one, or because they refer scans out and want to understand what comes back. If you are weighing up a scanner, the resources section at the end covers what they cost to buy and to run.
Can my whole team do it?
Yes, and they should — nurses included. Each person needs their own account, because a CPD certificate has to name the individual and carry their GDC number.
What if I fail the exam?
You sit it again. There is no limit and no extra charge. The questions are drawn at random from a pool, so you will not simply see the same fifteen.
Is this the same as the course Dr Ed Walker runs?
No. This online course is ours. Dr Walker's in-person courses at Octagon House are his, and go further — into hands-on reporting and report writing. They complement each other, and the section above tells you where to book his.
