See the Helios AiM system in action
A short demonstration showing how the magnetic sheath and sensor tracking make positioning virtually foolproof — even for less experienced team members.
Foolproof positioning, every time
The magnetic sheath clips to any size 1 or 2 sensor. The Hyperlight M detects the sensor's exact position inside the patient's mouth and guides you to perfect alignment in four steps — no re-takes, no cone-cuts, no guesswork.

Adjust distance
The on-screen indicator shows whether you're too close or too far from the sensor.

Centre the beam
Live feedback helps you align the X-ray beam with the centre of the sensor.

Correct the angle
Vertical and horizontal alignment guides prevent cone-cuts and distortion.

Expose & capture
Green light means you're ready — fire the exposure and get a diagnostic-quality image first time.
Why dentists are switching to handheld
The Hyperlight M does everything a wall-mounted unit does — and a few things it can't.
Move between surgeries
One unit, multiple rooms. Pick it up and take it to the chair — no installation in every surgery, no duplicated kit, no wasted floor space.
Helios AiM tracking
The magnetic sheath pairs with sensors inside the Hyperlight M to guide positioning in real time. Trainees and locums get it right first time.
Works with any sensor
The Helios AiM sheath fits any size 1 or size 2 intraoral sensor — Carestream, DEXIS, Sopro, Planmeca, generic. No proprietary lock-in.
Battery powered
No cables, no mains dependence. Rechargeable battery delivers hundreds of exposures per charge — take it home, take it to domiciliary visits.
Integrated back-scatter shield
The built-in operator shield protects you from back-scattered radiation — no lead apron required, no exclusion zone, no standing behind a wall.
Three patient presets
Adult, child and peri-apical presets on the touchscreen. One-tap dose selection — no fiddly sub-menus, no mis-setting exposure time.
Yes — and the numbers back it up.
Most UK dentists are trained to view X-rays as high-risk. The reality: a single intraoral exposure delivers less radiation than you get from half a day walking around outside.
The Hyperlight M's integrated back-scatter shield, 0.3 mm lead-equivalent shielding and tight beam collimation mean the operator receives a fraction of the patient dose — and the patient dose itself is already among the lowest of any medical imaging.
UK regulatory bodies (HSE, Public Health England, GDC) all recognise handheld X-ray devices as safe for dental use when operated correctly. The Hyperlight M is CE marked, IRR17-compliant and fully approved for UK clinical use.

One unit. Every surgery. Every visit.
The Hyperlight M lives on its charging stand between uses and travels with the clinician when it's time to image. One £1,800 unit can replace multiple wall-mounted X-rays across a multi-surgery practice.
- Share across 2, 3 or 5 surgeries instead of buying one per room
- No installation downtime or disruption to existing surgeries
- Use for domiciliary visits, nursing homes or chairside consults
- Ideal second unit for busy implant or endodontic practices
- Battery rated for 300+ exposures per charge

Frequently asked questions
Is handheld X-ray actually safe for the operator?
Yes. The Hyperlight M has an integrated back-scatter shield with 0.3 mm lead equivalent shielding, and the beam is tightly collimated. The operator dose per exposure is a fraction of the patient dose — typically below 0.1 µSv, well within every UK and European safe-use guideline. No lead apron, no exclusion zone, no standing behind a wall.
The HSE, Public Health England and the GDC all recognise handheld dental X-ray as safe when the device is CE-marked and operated in line with IRR17 — which the Hyperlight M is.
What's a critical exam and why do I need one?
A critical examination is a legal requirement under IRR17 before a new X-ray unit is put into clinical use. It confirms the equipment meets safety standards, radiation output is correct, and all safety features work as intended. It has to be carried out by a qualified Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA).
You can either add our RPA's critical exam to your order (£250 + VAT, we arrange everything) or use your own RPA if you've already got one. Either way, the exam has to happen before you start using the device clinically.
Which sensors does the Helios AiM sheath fit?
The Helios AiM magnetic sheath is designed to fit any standard size 1 or size 2 intraoral sensor — Carestream RVG, DEXIS, Sopro, Planmeca, Schick, most generic brands. The sheath clips on with magnets and is reusable between patients (wipe down with standard disinfectant between uses).
How does the sensor tracking actually work?
The Helios AiM sheath contains small magnetic markers. The Hyperlight M has sensors built into its head that detect those markers and calculate the sheath's exact position, angle and distance relative to the X-ray tube. The touchscreen gives you real-time feedback as you position the unit — adjust distance, centre the beam, correct the angle, then fire. It virtually eliminates cone-cuts and retakes.
Can I use it for domiciliary visits?
Yes — the Hyperlight M is battery-powered and portable, making it well-suited to domiciliary and care home visits. You'll still need to follow your practice's own domiciliary radiography protocols and ensure IRR17 compliance at the visit location, but there's no technical reason why not.
What's the battery life like?
A fully charged Li-ion battery is rated for 300+ exposures, which is several days of normal clinical use for most practices. The charging stand keeps it topped up between uses. A full charge takes around 2 hours.
How long is the warranty?
1 year full manufacturer warranty on the Hyperlight M itself, plus support from our UK team throughout. If anything goes wrong, you call us — we don't punt you to a manufacturer helpline.
What happens after I order?
Order before 3pm and your Hyperlight M is dispatched next working day. If you've chosen our critical exam option, our RPA will contact you within 2 working days of delivery to arrange a visit — usually within a week. If you're using your own RPA, you arrange that directly. Either way, the unit is ready to use as soon as the critical exam is signed off.
